POI INTERNATIONAL COMPOSITION COMPETITION
October, 15th, 2024 - February, 5th, 2025
CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION
The POI International Composition Competition will be held in June 2025. Its objective is to open more opportunities for composers to premiere their works while offering a wider range of music to the POI faculty/advanced student orchestra called Master Camerata, during the Premier Orchestral Institute.
This competition is open to all nationalities and is seeking to motivate all composers to include folk music elements in their compositions from their countries, as a way to help preserve their cultural heritage.
Requirements
All participants must upload all documents no later than February 5th, 2025, in order to be considered for the competition.
All participants must submit the following to GetAccepted
PDF of the score with a title. DO NOT write composer's name.
Recording in MP3, or MIDI files. A link to a drive is also acceptable.
Official proof of candidate’s age (ID or passport)
Two recent high quality headshots in color
Program notes of the submitting work in English
Short bio.
Eligibility
Entrants must be between 18 and up.
A maximum of 2 entries per composer.
Composition must be for a string chamber orchestra. No electronics or other instruments may be included.
Composition must last a minimum of 8 minutes and a maximum of 10 minutes. To request a single exception to this requirement, please email us at info@poimso.com
Composition must not have been commercially published or publicly performed, or won a competition before.
PDF scores must be neat and perfectly legible. Please use computer-generated music noting software. NO handwriting scores.
Composer’s name should NOT appear anywhere on the score, or any other reference that reveals the identity of the applicant. Title of the composition should be included.
Recordings of computer-generated MP3 or MIDI files must be submitted online. Online links are allowed.
Winner will be notified by email and results will be posted also on the POI website, and social media on March 15th, 2024.
Selection
There would be one piece selected to be performed by the faculty/advanced student orchestra, Master Camerata.
The winner piece would be selected by professional composition faculty judges. Blind adjudication.
The winner will be announced on February 28th, 2025 by 5:00 pm CT
Rehearsals of the winning work are from June 9th to 12th, 2025. Concert June 13th, 2025 at 7:00 pm at Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex Auditorium at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS

The winner would work closely with Alexander Gordon, conductor of Master Camerata, who would dedicate the rehearsal time necessary to achieve the best performance of the piece.
Social media and POI online platforms will be used to promote the composer and his work.
For out of state/international, air ticket up to $1500 USD, housing and meals will be provided.
Winner will receive a certificate of participation by the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra
